The Ukrainian diaspora is one of the largest in the world — an estimated twenty million people across Canada, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Germany, Kazakhstan, and dozens of other countries trace their roots to Ukrainian lands. Many are second-, third-, or fourth-generation descendants who hold no Ukrainian citizenship and never have, yet feel a living connection to the country through family, language, or faith. Ukrainian law offers this global community a formal legal status of its own: the Certificate of a Foreign Ukrainian (посвідчення закордонного українця), a document that recognizes a person's Ukrainian ethnic and cultural origin and unlocks a set of practical immigration and educational privileges without requiring citizenship or renunciation of any existing nationality.
